【by Allie Mikalatos】
bacon in first, heat to high,
meat sizzles, shrinks, seasoning
awake and ready for eggs.
good morning to the barn cat,
the grass, the overcast sky—
air grainy in anticipation of rain,
hello to the young bantam,
small for her age,
crack!
one egg in the pan as
rain arrives, a fine gray light
riding on a horse, hooves beating
like a hummingbird’s wings and I dream
I am a scallop swimming
beneath rippling tides,
watching weathered glass
tumble
fragmented and shiny.
the rain settles into an
elegant dressage then
trots away to let
the sun towel off the patio as the
egg smokes,
the bacon burns, and
the fire alarm sets in,
waking mom who yells, not again!
